Africa is all about the wildlife and of course spotting the famous big 5 (Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino & Lion) but I was after an up-close and personal experience with one of Africa’s greatest predators the Great White Shark!
Undoubtedly one of the world’s best locations to see these impressive creatures is Cape Town. Between the islands of Geyser Rock and Dyer Island is a narrow and shallow channel called Shark Alley - reputed to be the world’s best place for Great White shark cage diving. Due to the resident seal colonies in the area, Shark Alley has been dubbed “the supermarket for sharks”.
A short boat ride from Gansbaai, Shark Alley is ideal for those who wish to experience the thrill of getting up close and personal with these giant predators, but who do not possess a dive certification. Your cage dive takes place just metres below the surface of the water so no dive experience is necessary.
It is truly a thrilling experience as you witness firsthand the sharks approaching the cage in search of some fresh tuna bait. Armed with my underwater camera I clicked furiously as these streamlined sharks darted back and forth.
As Great Whites are largely surface feeders you also get great views from the boat deck. So for those who do not want to delve into the ocean waters you can still enjoy a great wildlife display!
