Johannesburg and Sandton

One of the toughest choices you’ll make in Johannesburg is what to do next. Founded on the discovery of gold back in 1886, today the city offers travellers a feast of new experiences whether it’s marvelling at the Johannesburg Zoo, soaking up the atmosphere at the famed Moloko Nightclub or stepping off a 24 storey building for a shot of adrenalin. You’ll definitely want to arrive with a healthy dose of energy to make the most of this bustling urban jungle.

The world’s biggest urban forest

Nature can only be described as dramatic in Johannesburg. Once grassland, today there are over 600 parks and open spaces to explore, from the tranquil to the exhilarating. Take a trip to Sterkfontein Valley to the Cradle of Humankind; discover 2000 different animals at the Johannesburg Zoo; travel beneath the streets to the Wonder Cave or experience first-hand the big cats at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. Or if you feel like taking the city easy for the day, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens could be the ticket.

Looking for a shot of adrenalin?

How many adventure spots give you a ride you won’t forget and a shot of culture at the same time? If bungy is your thing, take the 100m leap between the Orlando Cooling Towers and try to catch the famous Soweto artwork as you go. Or if you feel like taking a walk, you might like to rap jump off a 24 storey building; a surf, then try sand boarding just on the city outskirts or get an aerial view of Johannesburg and surrounding mountains on a Balloon ride from Hartbeespoort Dam.

Getting to know Johannesburg

A city steeped in history, change and turbulence, if you’re seeking a better understanding of Johannesburg, you won’t be disappointed. For a personal look at township life, take the Soweto Township tour; visit Nelson Mandela’s former home; learn about the anti-apartheid student uprising at Hector Pieterson Museum and then take in the nearby Apartheid Museum.

Fuelling your day

Mozambican piri-piri or Somali stews, fuelling yourself after a full day exploring Johannesburg is yet another experience that you’ll be writing home about. A melting pot of African inspired tastes as well as top notch fare from pub ‘n’ grub to pizza, Johannesburg knows all too well how to keep your energy up with great food after a full day.

The night is young

Johannesburg’s reputation for incredible nightlife won’t let you down. Whether you want to take in a show or soak up the city’s atmosphere, you’ll once again find it hard to choose. If you feel like a flutter, head to the Gold Reef City Casino; for a taste of urban African nightclub life try clubs like Moloko, an amazing mix of urban life and African culture for a clubbing experience you won’t forget. Or if the drama aficionado within is calling, head to one of Johannesberg’s numerous theatres for a local production, an international show or an experimental performance from the city’s drama students.

Something to take home

After visiting Johannesburg, it’s hard not to want to take a little piece home with you. If you’re searching for African curio, Sandton City is the place you want to head. Traditional masks, ethnic beadwork and jewellery, clothing and crafts can be found at Sandton City curio shops in the heart of Johannesburg’s business district.

Hiking Table Mountain

Table Mountain is impossible to ignore. Towering over the City Bowl of Cape Town, like a protective mother, the mountain is the pride and joy of Capetonians. And rightly so. With the amazing Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens nestled in the foothills, the breathtaking views over Table Bay and Robben Island from the top, and the revolving cars of the Cableway, Table Mountain is a must for anyone who is lucky enough to find themselves in South Africa’s Mother City.

Cape Town

We woke up in Cape Town to blue skies,  perfect as we were heading to Table Mountain and knew it meant we were in for some great views from the top.  Tickets in hand we headed to the cable car which can carry 65 people at a time, and you stand the whole way up as the car rotates 180°C.  A very smooth ride, you didn’t even feel like you were moving.
